PeerWORX® Overview
PeerWORX® is a research based peer-tutoring program developed by Literacy West NY, Inc. to assist youth in achieving academic success. Middle and high school students receive training on tutoring techniques and assist teachers in reinforcing school curriculum with elementary, middle and high school students in need of academic assistance. The PeerWORX® offers two types of programs- the service learning program and the youth work experience program. More than just a peer tutoring program, PeerWORX® promotes positive role modeling and mentoring relationships utilizing a community’s greatest resource - their youth.

Tutors receive 12 hours of training focusing on the three areas of Core, Elementary and Secondary. Each section is designed to provide tutors with the foundation for a successful tutoring experience. The training incorporates lecture, individual, and group activities.
A fundamental part of the training is Positive Affirmative Language (PAL). All tutors are taught how to use PAL or positive and encouraging words in their communications with learners, the staff and school personnel. PAL use is reinforced during all tutoring sessions.
PeerWORX® Service-Learning
The service learning program is conducted during and after school hours. Tutors may receive service-learning credit and other incentives based on their hours of service.
Middle and High school tutors are often assigned to specific elementary or middle school teachers to assist a learner in the classroom, during the tutor’s study hall periods, or after school. Tutors may assist by conducting reading groups for the whole class, a few, or even one learner.
Tutors maintain a journal of their activities and submit reports monthly. Quarterly training’s offer tutors opportunities to expand their tutoring skills.
